San Pietro is an ancient church dating back to the 8th century.
According to some, the name in Mavino or in Mavinas means “in the highest vineyards” and alludes to its location away from the town.
A hermit lived there until the mid-nineteenth century because of its isolated position.
Goats grazed in the churchyard and the people of Sirmione took refuge within its walls during the Second World War bombings.
