Bench in memory of Giulio Regeni

Veduta Sandro Pertini, Sirmione

Giulio Regeni was an Italian PhD student at the University of Cambridge kidnapped in Cairo on 25 January 2016, the day of the fifth anniversary of the Tahrir Square protests, and found lifeless on the following 3 February near an Egyptian secret service prison. From the very beginning there was no clarity on the causes of his death: the Egyptian authorities produced different reconstructions and initially denied the collaboration of the Italian investigators.

Even today, on the side of the investigations, no great news has emerged: a stalemate that is also political.
A story that has seen a succession of denials, red herrings, judicial and journalistic investigations, conspiracy theories, silences and political accusations.

The Sirmione Municipal Administration, through this title, wanted to keep the memory of Giulio Regeni alive: a story of courage and sacrifice that reminds us how much the search for truth and justice must be a daily and collective exercise.
