Photography as a Visual Poem: Magnum Photos’ new workshop in Sirmione
5 days with Jacob and Sara Aue Sobol in a photographic exploration between human connections and the poetry of everyday life
Magnum Photos will be in Sirmione from May 5 to 9, 2025, with Photography as a Visual Poem, a workshop led by Jacob Aue Sobol and Sara Aue Sobol to “capture the poetry of everyday life in Sirmione“.
“In collaboration with the city, Magnum Photos offers a unique chance for photographers worldwide to capture moments that speak not just of people and places but of human connection and the poetry of daily life”.
- The Workshop: Photography and Connections
The workshop Photography as a Visual Poem organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Sirmione, will focus on human connections and how to capture them through photography. Sirmione, with its tradition of hospitality, is the ideal place to create authentic bonds between people, environment and culture. Participants will be guided by Jacob and Sara Aue Sobol to develop techniques to connect more deeply with people and places, capturing the essence of each interaction and the poetry of everyday life. Sirmione confirms itself as the perfect context to explore photography as a tool for dialogue and human understanding.
- Jacob and Sara Aue Sobol: Universal Emotions and Human Connections
Born in Copenhagen in 1976, Jacob Aue Sobol is known for his ability to narrate the universality of human emotions, exploring themes such as love and vulnerability. Among his most famous works, the book Sabine (2004) is inspired by the time spent in Greenland, while I, Tokyo tells the story of the loneliness experienced in the Japanese capital. A member of Magnum Photos since 2007, Sobol has worked on projects in different parts of the world, including Arrivals and Departures along the Trans-Siberian railway and James’ House, dedicated to an Inuit man.
Sara Aue Sobol studied photography in Italy and Denmark and has carried out photographic projects in Russia and Mexico. She is currently the Art Director of Jacob Aue Sobol with whom she lives in Denmark.
- Workshop Conclusion and Public Presentation
The workshop will end on Friday, May 9th with a public meeting, during which the works created by the participants will be presented.
In 2022, Magnum Photos had already held a workshop in Sirmione with the New York master Richard Kalvar. Sirmione is pleased to welcome a Magnum workshop again, which promises, once again, to inspire not only the participants, but also the entire community and photography enthusiasts.
