Gospel: music that unites and inspires

The term gospel comes from the English “God Spell”, which means Gospel or “good news” and its lyrics are often inspired by the Bible, especially the Psalms. However, some gospel currents also perform in more secular contexts.

Gospel refers to two musical genres: one, linked to sacred music, emerged in African-American Christian-Methodist churches in the 1930s, similar to spirituals; the other, broader, includes religious music spread by artists of various faiths and ethnicities, especially in the southern United States, and then in the rest of the world.
