Richard Kalvar, photographer of Magnum Photos, will accompany the public on a guided tour of the exhibition La voce delle mani, Maria Callas and the Italians, Photographs by Cristina de Middel and Richard Kalvar.
Kalvar’s photographs exhibited in the exhibition focus on the gestures and hands of Italians, which the photographer began shooting on the occasion of his first visit to Italy in 1978. Arriving in Rome, he immediately understood that he had arrived in a real paradise for photography: “I understood that I was in the land of perpetual human interaction, expressed not only with the voice but with the mouth, cheeks, eyes, eyebrows, forehead, hands (hands!) – in short, all the body”.

The meeting with Richard Kalvar is scheduled at the end of the street photography workshop  of which Kalvar himself is a teacher and which will be held in Sirmione from 10 to 14 October. After the guided tour we will have the opportunity to see the most interesting photographs taken during the workshop.

Richard Kalvar is an American photographer. He joined Magnum Photos in 1975 and has served multiple times as vice president and once as president. He has held important exhibitions in the United States, France, Germany, Spain and Italy and has published numerous books. Editorial assignments and even commercial work gave Kalvar an additional opportunity to take personal photographs. He has made many “documentary stories” which have allowed him to disengage from the traditional documentary mode. Ambiguity is at the center of his photographic language that seeks mystery and multiple meaning through surprising shots and meticulous timing. Kalvar describes his approach as “more like poetry than photojournalism: it attacks on an emotional level”.
