Winning a trip to the United States in the lottery, following punk and indie rock bands on tour, and receiving a camera as a gift. Hiro Tanaka‘s artistic debut has the unpredictable and evocative qualities of opportunities that can change people’s destinies and careers.
On Friday, October 17, at the Hotel Catullo, the photographer featured in the Sirmione Photo Residency 2025 will be in conversation with journalist Francesca Roman, recounting his poetics and the individual events that led him to become an on the road photographer.
Hiro Tanaka will present his photography book, Chicharrón, which won the Cosmos Arles PDF Award and was selected for the Sirmione residency. He will also reveal some insights into the project he is developing for the Sirmione Photo Residency: a visual interpolation of the Sirmione map, incorporating people, landscape, architecture, objects, and atmosphere.
Hiro Tanaka is a Japanese photographer who lived for several years in the United States, where he began taking photographs by chance over 15 years ago after winning a lottery trip to America. While on tour with a punk and indie rock band, he received his first camera and began documenting life on the road. Since then, he has completed numerous photography projects, participated in artistic residencies in Asia, Europe, and the United States, and has received international awards. He has won the Cosmos Arles PDF Award (Les Rencontres d’Arles, France) and the TPD Book Award (Italy), and has been a finalist or nominee for the World Press Photo Global Talent, the PHotoESPAÑA Best Book Award, the Gomma Photography Grant, and the Kassel Photobook Award. His work has been exhibited at international festivals and galleries and published in numerous monographs.
