The finances of the Pontevedro are in grave danger and only Anna, rich widow of the banker Glavary, could heal the State by marrying a Pontevedrino.
Baron Zeta, Pontevedrino ambassador in Paris, takes advantage of the party organized in the embassy to bring Anna and Danilo together, hoping that the old flame could reignite.
